Shopping in the South Downs
The South Downs National Park stretches across our corner of West Sussex encompassing the picturesque market towns of Midhurst and Petworth, and the surrounding villages and hamlets, the Goodwood Estate, and northwards as far as Black Down (the highest point in the National Park) and east to the historic town of Arundel, with its imposing castle. Within this expanse you’ll find interesting and unique places to shop: whether you’re looking for tempting produce to fill the fridge during your stay, in search of a little retail therapy away from the regular high street, or are tracking down that perfect memento to remind you of a wonderful break.
Petworth’s reputation as a centre for antiques is hard to beat nationally, with a wide concentration of dealers within a mile radius. Dedicated collectors looking for a particular piece, or those browsing for inspiration will find a myriad of items to tempt.
Farm shops and opportunities to sample Sussex produce are located both rurally and within towns and villages and are worth making a stop for. Locally baked bread, coffee roasters, vineyards and breweries, traditional butchers and fishmongers, fruit and veg producers, delicatessens and farm shops packed with an array of items with slow-reared, grass fed organic meat and award winning wine just some of the gems to be discovered – and sampled!
In Midhurst and Petworth, you’ll find thoughtfully curated fashion, jewellery, homewares and gifts; bookshops you’ll have to tear yourself away from and quality children’s toy shops. There’s an interesting shop at every turn so be sure to leave plenty of time to browse and explore.
